The JARGOT System -- Database is online!
- What it is: - jARGOT is a dictionary system, which aims to provide a one-to-one mapping of equivalent words between languages. Words can have multiple meanings, and thus have multiple entries, but since jARGOT is context sensitive, you will be sure you get the right word, for the right occasion. The main role is to disambiguate words which carry multiple meanings, depending on context.
- What it isn't: - jARGOT is NOT a translation service, although the system could be used to power a translation engine. It is merely a map of equivalent words across multiple languages. jARGOT is NOT a dictionary. Dictionaries give you a list of roughly equivalent words, and require you to make the appropriate choice, jargot gives you one word: the right word.
- Key Features
- Context-Sensitive - Search terms which are ambiguous can be augmented with a context, which can be absolute (a word in "technical" or "legal" context), relative (a word that occurs between a verb and a noun, or a word that appears in the same sentence as the word "apple") or both.
- Multilingual - jARGOT is only as good as the volume of entries it has... the more the better. Not only will it be capable of lookups between major languages like English and Spanish, but will have the capacity to perform lookups between in distinct spoken forms, such as with Standard Finnish and Colloquial Spoken Finnish
- Intra-Language Registers - Not only can jARGOT accommodate a multitude of languages, but also, there will be room to accomodate various registers within a language, such as Spanish Formal (usted) and Spanish Familiar (tú).
